On Michael Furdyk

His presentation was very interesting and I found that I could connect a lot of what he has done with some of my own experiences.

It turns out that his first company, M & S Enterprises, made software to index his baseball card collection, but nobody wanted to buy the software so his parents bought him the modem he was saving for anyway. At that point he got online and met some people that were doing the same thing as him, had a small website, and they decided to merge their sites together. This turned into MyDesktop.com. Later he owned buybuddy.com. Buybuddy was a site you could while buying anything. You put in what you want and it told you how much it cost at each store and where you get it for the best price.

I actually learned a lot about entrepreneurship and how to start a business today. He explained how you have to make sure you cover the legal end with contracts and such. He also explained that you have to know the people you are working with before you cover the legal stuff. As he had a few people in a company that didn’t contribute because they already owned part of the company.

My favorite part of the whole thing was probably when someone asked, “What web-design software do you use?” Michael said that he uses Dreamweaver, which is obviously what I use. However, he also said that he would go in chats and find out what code people are using and “view source” to figure something out. This is exactly what I do. If I see a certain feature in a site that I like I’ll “view source” and find out how to do it. I also like to use forums and bulletin boards. The WordPress support forums are especially helpful.

Overall it was a good day. After listening to Michael we went to Kewpee for lunch.

Dreamweaver 8 Test

Well I took the Dreamweaver 8 certification test today. It was actually a beta test. I don’t really know what that means, but I know I can still get certified and I’m pretty sure the certification is the same as if I took the regular test. Plus… it was a free test. One of my teachers must have registered or something and had 10 test that she could give and since she knew that I’ve worked with Dreamweaver she asked if I wanted to take the test. Of course I did, what’s there to loose?

The test was, however, a “two and a half hour test”. That’s how long you got to take it anyway. It took me an hour, so I’m not sure if that is a bad thing that I finished with an hour and a half to spare.

The test itself was a little goofy though. There were quite a few (5-10) questions that were repeated at least five if not more times throughout the test. Now, the test was 132 questions long, these repeated questions account for 25-50 of those questions. So I guess there were actually about 70-100 questions on the test. Besides all the repeated questions, the test was almost completely multiple choice with a few sequensing questions. It didn’t have you actually working in Dreamweaver at all.

The test wasn’t too hard. My score was 689… I’m assuming that’s out of 1000, but they didn’t tell me. I don’t know if i passed or not either — I guess once my teacher sends the results in they will decide what a good score is and whoever has a high enough score gets the certificate — I’ll let you know if I passed when I get my test results. That being said, most of the questions were fairly easy. A few of the questions were so easy that I was scared to answer them because I thought it was a trick question and there was the occasional question that was so wordy that I didn’t even know what it was asking.

I would have thought that the test would have concentrated solely on Dreamweaver and that they would have you working in Dreamweaver and performing actions in Dreamweaver. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong — This was more of a general knowledge HTML/Web Design exam than a Dreamweaver test. There were a lot of questions about Copyright, Accessibility — as in accessible to people with disabilities, and general HTML/CSS questions for someone who might be using Dreamweaver as their primary HTML editor or something. It definatly wasn’t what I thought it would be, but I still knew most of the answers.

So far it has been a pretty good overall experience. Now I’m anxious to see my final results and if I get the certifiacte. I think this could be a great thing to have when I’m going to get a job doing this stuff.

Burger Bash

The “Burger Bash” was today! It was awesome. There was a lot of good music and good food. Jazz ensemble, Treble choir, and Sgt. Peppers played. We played “Hey Jude” with everyone. It was a lot of fun to play and hopefully just as fun to watch.
